Encumbrance Rules by System

D&D 5e Variant

This uses the optional encumbrance rules from the Player's Handbook. Push/drag/lift capacity equals 30 × Strength.

  • Burdened: 5×STR to 10×STR. Speed drops 10 ft.
  • Heavily Burdened: 10×STR to 15×STR. Speed drops 20 ft. Disadvantage on checks.
  • Over Max: Cannot move until weight is reduced.

Coins count: 50 coins = 1 lb. Most DMs skip coin weight for small amounts.

Pathfinder 2e Bulk

PF2e uses Bulk units. 10 Bulk = 1 Bulk unit. Light items have no Bulk until you carry several.

  • Encumbered: Bulk limit exceeded. Speed drops 5 ft.
  • Over Max: 5 + (STR mod) over limit. Cannot move.
  • Bulk Limit: 5 + STR modifier.

This tracker converts pounds to Bulk at 1 Bulk per 10 lb for items not listed with Bulk values.

OSRIC (Old School)

OSRIC uses coin weight directly. 10 coins = 1 encumbrance point. Movement rate depends on total points.

  • 1–50: 120 ft/round
  • 51–70: 90 ft/round
  • 71–100: 60 ft/round
  • 101+: 30 ft/round

Container limits matter. A backpack holds about 400 coins of gear. A large sack holds 600.

Custom Rules

Set your own thresholds. Enter the weight values for each tier. Useful for homebrew systems or house rules.

Questions & Troubleshooting

How do I handle coins and gems?

Enter coins as an item with the total coin count and weight calculated at your coins-per-pound ratio (default 50:1). For gems, most systems treat them as negligible weight unless you're carrying a hoard. Enter them as 0 lb unless your GM rules otherwise.

Can I track multiple characters?

Yes. Use the character name field and save each character's inventory. The share link stores one character at a time. For full party tracking, open the link in separate tabs or use the export feature to save each sheet.

What if my system isn't listed?

Select Custom mode and enter your own weight thresholds. This works for GURPS, Warhammer, or any system with numeric encumbrance rules.

Why does my speed penalty seem wrong?

Double-check your Strength score and the selected system. D&D 5e uses 5×/10×/15× STR multipliers. Pathfinder uses Bulk. OSRIC uses coin-based movement rates. The wrong system selection is the most common cause of unexpected results.

How do I account for mounts or carts?

Add the mount or cart as a custom item with its carrying capacity. Track the mount's load separately by creating a second character entry named after the mount.

My inventory disappeared after closing the browser.

PackWeight saves to your browser's local storage. If you cleared your browser data or are in private browsing mode, the data is lost. Use the export button to save a text backup, or use the share link which stores the inventory in the URL.

Practical Tips for the Table

Before the Session

Load your starting inventory before the game starts. Print the sheet or have the share link ready. This saves time when loot drops mid-combat.

During Combat

When enemies drop armor or weapons, add them quickly using the quick-add chips. The meter updates instantly so you know if you can move at full speed.

Treasure Division

Use the tracker to split loot fairly. Each player can see their current load and decide what to take, sell, or leave behind.

Travel Scenarios

For hex crawls and wilderness travel, encumbration affects daily travel distance. A heavily loaded party moves slower and may need to abandon gear to cross difficult terrain.
